Mr. Fortune's Burial

On Thursday, September 12th, a Connecticut slave was buried at Riverside Cemetery, 215 years after his death. Mr. Fortune was an African-American enslaved in the late 18th century in the household of Waterbury physician and bone surgeon Dr. Preserved Porter. The Riverside Board of Directors would like to acknowledge the involvement of Board member John W. Ford, President of Alderson Slater Mulville Funeral Homes, for working with the Mattatuck Museum and the African-American History Project Committee to set-up Mr. Fortune's funeral arrangements which were held at St. John's Church on the Waterbury green.

Fortune is buried in the St. John Church Plot at Riverside Cemetery.
